Fortnite-Inspired Durr Burger Recipe (1)

What’s Up, Hungry People

Fortnite has officially taken over my kitchen. If you haven’t heard of Fortnite, then you probably aren’t a parent or girlfriend to a gamer—or you’ve been living under a rock.

Surely by now, the mainstream public has seen some of the dances that have been popping up just about everywhere.

Honestly, I know nothing about Fortnite, but my boyfriend plays nearly every day, so it’s hard to not see or hear some Fortnite-related news from time to time.

Namely, that time that apparently the Fortnite universe started leaking into our real world universe and objects from the game teleported onto Earth IRL—and dropped not only colorful llamas across Europe but also this… Durr Burger…that showed up in the California desert.

MatPat from the Game Theorists does a pretty good job explaining the theory behind what is going on in the game that is making certain items disappear and then reappear in the real world.

(Honestly, it’s just really clever marketing, but call it what you will…)

The giant Durr Burger in the desert got my foodie gears turning. If you’re looking for a way to connect with a gamer over a game you essentially know nothing about, then the Durr Burger IRL will bridge that delicious gap—and maybe pull them away from the TV or computer for long enough to have a decent conversation before they return to the Battle Royale.

My version of the Durr Burger has Spam for the tongue—because like everyone else who doesn’t play, you are probably being SPAMMED by Fortnite (GET IT???!). With mozzarella pearls for eyes and olives for the pupils and garnish, this delicious real-life Durr Burger recipe is the perfect dinner for any die-hard Fortnite fanatic.

Here’s What You Need

  • Ground beef: For the hearty burger patties.
  • Sea salt: To season the patties perfectly.
  • Pepper: Adds a bit of a kick to the beef.
  • Spam: Sliced and used as the burger’s “tongue.”
  • Tomato slices: Fresh and juicy for the classic burger touch.
  • American cheese: Melts nicely over the patties.
  • Mozzarella pearls: Creates the eyes of the burger.
  • Black olives: Sliced to make the pupils.
  • Green olives with pimento filling: Adds extra flavor and garnishes the burger.

Let’s Cook

In a large bowl, mix the sea salt and pepper into the ground beef. Form the beef into two half-pound patties, about an inch thick. (Optional: You can make the patties any size you desire, but I kept mine as close to the ‘real’ version as I could.)

Cooking the Patties

Heat a cast iron or flat top iron skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the burgers until a golden crust has formed on each side. Cook the burgers until they reach your desired doneness, about 5-8 minutes per side. (Rare: 120-125°F | Medium Rare: 130-135°F | Medium Well: 145-150°F | Well-done: 155-160°F)

Remove the cooked patties from the skillet but leave the grease behind. Let the burgers rest for about 8-10 minutes.

Preparing the Spam

Slice the Spam into quarter-inch thick slices. Fry the Spam in the remaining grease in the skillet until it’s heated through and just beginning to brown on the edges.

Assembling the Durr Burger

Top the patties with two slices of American cheese and a thick slice of tomato. Place the Spam so that it hangs off the side of the burger like a tongue.

Creating the Eyes

Slice the black olives thin and then attach the slices to small mozzarella pearls to make them look like eyes. Skewer the mozzarella with a toothpick and affix it to the top sides of the burger bun.

Serve with french fries and a variety of your gamer’s favorite toppings.

Tips for the Perfect Durr Burger

  • Get the Cheese Melting Just Right: Place a lid over the skillet for the last minute of cooking to help the cheese melt evenly.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh tomatoes and high-quality ground beef make a world of difference in taste.
  • Resting the Patties: Allow the patties to rest after cooking to keep them juicy.
  • Experiment with Toppings: Feel free to add lettuce, pickles, or any other favorite toppings to customize your Durr Burger.
  • Avoid Overcrowding the Skillet: Cook the patties one at a time if needed to ensure a proper sear.

If you’re as clueless about Fortnite as I am, this Durr Burger recipe is a fun and tasty way to connect with the gamer in your life. It’s got all the charm of the in-game item, complete with a Spam “tongue” and mozzarella “eyes.” Plus, it’s an excuse to get creative in the kitchen and enjoy a meal together away from the screen. So, grab your ingredients and get ready to whip up this funky burger! It might just become a new favorite in your house. And who knows, you might even get a little more Fortnite lore along the way. Happy cooking, Hungry People!
